We have been mesmerized by the talented designer behind the brand Frantic about Frances, Jenny Mearns, with her beautiful handmade vintage lingerie. She describes her creations as “fabulous, frivolous and never boring” and we agree!

Everything is lovingly handmade from fabrics she sources from places like London, Brighton and Paris. Her aim is to make lingerie that is sexy without being intimidating. “Lingerie is (or should be!) about the girl wearing it and how it makes her feel and exude confidence.”

  • Size matters!

Should you get your girlfriend’s taste and preference slightly wrong, she will be understanding. However, get the size wrong and you could get yourself in all sorts of trouble! Bra Appeal celebrates 5th Birthday

2011 sees the 5th birthday of the ​BreastTalk.co.uk Bra Appeal. In the last five years over £5,000 has been raised for Breast Cancer Campaign and bras have been sent off to many groups and organisations.

It all started just after Christmas 5 years ago when Carol Tromans, owner of lingerie advice & shopping website BreastTalk.co.uk was having a clear out of her old bras. Carol says, “It seemed a shame to throw away lots of bras that didn’t fit, all of them were in good condition”.

When Carol got into work the following day she set about trying to find somewhere to send the bras. At the time charity shops didn’t accept underwear and she couldn’t find anyone collecting old bras. Finally after much searching Centrepoint agreed to take the bras and hand them out to homeless Woman around the UK – The Bra Appeal had started.

The team at BreastTalk.co.uk got together and put up a Bra Appeal page on the website and started collecting bras. The response was amazing. Carol remembers, “We were running the appeal from home at the time and after a few weeks the dining room was full of old bras and we were sending huge boxes to Centrepoint every week. We needed to find other places to send the bras.”

With the publicity already generated it wasn’t difficult to find other avenues for the old bras. Here’s just a few things the bras have been used for:

  • Girls Guide groups have received bras to teach young girls about bras and the importance of wearing the correct size and style of bra.​​
  • Students have taken boxes of bras on missions and trips to third world countries.
  • Homeless charities have received bras to use as hand outs.
  • Schools have used our bras in lessons to teach girls about bras and boobs.

During​ 2010 BreastTalk.co.uk​ have been using the bras collected to raise money for Breast Cancer Campaign and also help women in poorer countries. The Bra Appeal has got together with BCR Textiles in the West Midlands who buy the bras and send them to third world countries for other women to use.

The Bra Appeal has so far raised over £5,000 for Breast Cancer Campaign.

In 2011 Carol hopes the appeal will go from strength to strength, “I’m hoping that sometime in 2011 we can hit the magic £10,000 mark which will be really exciting. I still can’t believe that we can do so much good with old bras that would have ended up thrown away on a landfill”.

An end to the confusion over bra sizes?

We certainly hope so! Good news, girls, lingerie retailers and universities have launched a new national association to end the confusion over bra sizing.

The Bra Retailers Association (BRA) are working on a kitemark that approved products will be marked with to ensure customers that they are getting a perfect bra fit. They are also working on educating about bra fitting, breast health and different bra styles for different body shapes, even going as far as advising schools. With the impartial support of the Association of Suppliers to the British Clothing Industry wearing the wrong size bra really could become a thing of the past.

The work of retailers with some of the UK’s leading academics, like bra fitting and design experts from De Montfort University and the breast health research group from the University of Portsmouth, will help all women have a full understanding and make the market place a lot less confusing, in turn avoiding negative effects on a woman’s health and comfort.

At barechic we are often approached by our customers on how they can overcome the varying bra sizes from brand to brand so we think that this initiative really cannot come quickly enough!
